Award-Winning Landscape: Rustic Residential Remodel
Overview
FireSky was hired for a backyard design-to-build project whose aim was to bring functionality and cohesiveness to a large outdoor space. The homeowner sought to modernize an unfocused backyard and divide it into sections that would provide spaces for cooking, dining, entertaining and recreation.
Design
FireSky’s design team decided to increase cohesiveness through materials and colors, while keeping the different functional areas separate yet navigable. With rustic building materials (like dark pavers, bricks and wood), the team matched the feel of the yard’s pinetree-dotted surroundings. Similar building materials and a dark color scheme in each section of the yard provides the homeowner with the cohesive design they sought.
The project included the construction of separate backyard sections: A cooking area complete with an outdoor kitchen that has plenty of storage, a cooktop island and a seatable bar area; a large dining area with a large table and ample seating; a lounge area with couches and an electric fireplace; and a recreation area with a mini golf green, a fire pit, lounge chairs and a ping pong table. An open-holed covering provides the dining and cooking areas with shade during the day, while string lights provide light to those areas and the recreation area at night.
The design extends over a large space, so the FireSky team incorporated loose stone walkways and shrubbery to take full advantage of the property’s boundaries and beautiful nature-filled surroundings. The base brown pavers-comprised patio floor is raised a few feet off of the ground around it in the cooking/dining/lounging areas, while a grade change to ground-level in the recreation area was used to add separation and dimension in the design. Placement of the fireplace takes advantage of the property’s best view. The rustic preference of the homeowners appears in the finer details, from the corten steel fire pit to warm lighting over the dining area.
